Stepping into Chila Welcomes You at the Imperial War Museum North is an experience that engages all the senses. This new exhibition, showcasing the work of the acclaimed British artist Chila Kumari Singh Burman, is a vibrant, multi-layered exploration of identity, heritage, and resistance. As the composer and sound designer for the exhibition, I had the immense privilege of creating an auditory landscape that complements and amplifies Chila’s bold, evocative visual world. The soundscape blends traditional Indian instrumentation with electronic textures, reflecting the fusion of tradition and modernity central to Chila’s work. Some moments call for bold, expressive sound, while others are subtler, inviting visitors to pause and reflect. The result is an immersive sonic environment that deepens the audience’s engagement with themes of migration, resilience, and transformation. Chila Welcomes You is an exhibition that demands to be felt as much as it is seen, and I hope the sonic landscape I’ve crafted enriches the journey for every visitor.
